The whole country should pay attention to an upcoming Ontario private member’s bill that aims to get tough on returning terrorists.
The Terrorist Activity Sanctions Act, the Sun has learned, will be tabled at Queen’s Park in the days ahead. It’s goal is to strip those who participate in terror acts abroad of provincial privileges at home.
Sanctions include denying drivers’ licences, health coverage, post-secondary tuition loans, housing support and more.
“Since the Federal Government doesn’t seem to take this seriously, I felt obligated to take action and send a message that there are consequences for leaving Ontario to commit indefensible crimes,” Ontario PC MPP Dave Smith, the bill’s sponsor, told the Sun.
It’s true. And he’s right.
The feds have shrugged off real concerns many Canadians have about returning ISIS fighters. We have at least 60 of them walking about freely in Canada. Only a handful have been charged under the terror provisions of Section 83 of the Criminal Code.
The Liberals don’t just fail to address the issue. They also shamelessly attack people who mention it.
